Today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published its first sustainability report. The report provides an overview of efforts to attain sustainability goals in 2022 and is an important milestone in the Mission Sustainable programme. Under the slogan 'Walk our Talk’ BZ is moving towards becoming a more sustainable and social organisation.

Greater insight
The report describes activities and results relating to the three objectives of the sustainability strategy launched at the end of 2021: climate change, circular economy and supply chain responsibility. It also looks at the lessons learned and examines sustainable operational management. The sustainability report gives a realistic indication of BZ's impact, and of the complexity of and dilemmas involved in making the organisation more sustainable. From this point onwards BZ will track these developments and share the results annually. In the years to come we will continue to improve reporting and will further fine-tune our sustainability strategy.

Carbon footprint
For a good indication of its carbon footprint, BZ asked 140 missions and selected departments in The Hague for data on their energy consumption. In total, approximately 55% of our carbon emissions came from journeys by plane. The electricity used by our real estate worldwide accounted for most of the remaining emissions. Mission Sustainable is actively working to further reduce these emissions, for example by making real estate more sustainable and investigating how we can reduce the impact of flying.

Circular operational management and supply chain responsibility
One of the leading themes of the sustainability strategy is supply chain responsibility. BZ seeks actively to minimise the risk of breaches of human rights and international labour standards. Investigation shows that such risks are mainly associated with facilities services contracts, IT hardware contracts and real estate projects. The report reflects at length on how to address these risks, for example by focusing on ensuring that companies that provide us with facilities services pay their employees a living wage. BZ is also launching 12 pilot projects to put circular operational management into practice.
